For school I had to design a product for the subject “ideeontwikkeling” (concept development).
For this subject we first had to collect images and photo’s for one year. Following up on that we had to take photographs ourselves. After this whole process we had to discover a pattern in our method and describe that. The next step was to convert this description into something commercial.
My definition was that my photo’s contained some sort of ‘space’. Not literally, but figuratively. the viewer can then give his own interpretation to it.
To convert this to something ‘commercial’ I came up with books. Because (most) books contain a story (like a photograph contains a story). I figured that if a part of the story was missing, people had to give there own meaning to it. Thats how I came up with Opslagwerk (reference book).
First I started with buying a lot of old books in pawn- and second hand shops. I removed all the pages and made it into a case of it by placing a zipper in it. That way there was a part of the story missing, plus people can literally give there own interpretation to it. And through this an actual space forms, same as in my definition.
I made 12 units, as it had to be (at least be able to be) mass-produced. To present the product I designed a decor of secondhand furniture.
