Willem de Kooning Academy routing and handouts

In collaboration with vuurrood I designed the routing and handouts for the open house at the Willem de Kooning Academy. The visitor was given a folder which also functions as a cover, with basic information about the academy on the front and back. Upon arrival visitors will see a wall of paper blocks where they can tear of leaflets of the studies they are interested in. Each study has his own leaflet, and contains basic information and a floorplan of where to find presentations and what time they start. To help the visitors a bit with finding their way in the multitude of studies the academy has to offer we designed a system where every study has his own color.

The whole idea of this concept is that instead of getting loads of information about studies you’re not really interested in, you get only the info about the studies you came for. You basically compose your own information package.

SCHERP EVENT

Together with Jessica de Ligt I’m designing the flyers and posters for the upcoming five editions of SCHERP, an event for new Dubstep/Juke/House music in Metropool, Hengelo. All the flyers are totally handmade on a scanner with different kinds of paper.

Graduation Project: A representation of Illustration

For my free assignment I made an infographic that shows everyone Illustrators work for, what they work with and in what disciplines near illustration they are also specialize.

Being an illustrator I always felt that people have a too narrow idea about the craftmanship. Most of the time assuming that illustrators work solely with pencils and making editorial illustrations. I wanted to make a point, showing we do a lot more than just that. This was the biggest motivation for me to visualize all these things that we illustrators do.

To prove that point I researched fifty Dutch illustrators and illustrative studio’s under three categories; clients they work for, fields they work in and resources they work with, and visualized the results in this infographic.

Graduation Project: Restyle of the iPhone widgets

The assignment was to restyle fifteen of Apple’s standard widgets for the iPhone. I find the original widgets don’t blend with each other, and old fashioned. My angle was to make them more fresh, touchable (given the fact that it is used for a touchscreen..), and more matching as a group.

Graduation Project: Division within the Netherlands

For a ‘deadline’ assignment I was supposed to make an illustration on very short notice. The subject was to make an editorial illustration about ‘division within the Netherlands’.

Graduation Project: Thesis about borders between creative disciplines fading, and the role of the illustrator in this developement.

I have always been an illustrator with an great interest in other disciplines like graphic design and photography. Because of that I find it hard to profile myself. Is calling yourself an illustrator encompassing enough for all the things you do?

In this thesis I have researched the history of the craftmanship, so if our role did change, the way we profile ourselves these days and why we do that, and the impact of media on our workfield.

It resulted in a small booklet of five thousand words, where the edge if the page is constantly moving, just like the subject.

Last friday I officialy finished my internship. To accomplish this I had to write an essay about the past four months where I reflect on all the work I’ve done and goals I achieved. The main subject in my essay is that I find it hard to profile myself as an typical illustrator, because I think that a lot of people have misunderstandings about what being an illustrator means, and how broad it can be.

Haven’t posted in a while, but thats because I’ve been very busy creating a shop in our exhibition space at Rotabs.

De Candyshop is a little studio/boutique located in the Rotabs Stylecenter. Owned by Charlie and Wendy, two Illustration students from the Willem de Kooning Academy. At De Candyshop you’ll be sure to get a visual sugar rush. De Candyshop sells unique and handmade stuff only!

Friday the 5th of November De Candyshop will have it’s grand opening from 18.00 – 21.00. You’ll be there too won’t you?

Pressure Cooker!

Last wednesday I attended the Pressure Cooker event, an initiative of Nieuwe Garde Rotterdam.

The intent of a Pressure Cooker is that 25 creative people join in groups of 5 to brainstorm about an assignment of one or a few commercial parties. Each time the event takes place in a different location, this time at the Wall Gallery, situated on 37th floor in one of the highest buildings in Rotterdam; the Red Apple. Quite an inspiring place to brainstorm!

I had a blast and met a lot of interesting new people, and am looking forward to the next Pressure Cooker!

We thought about typical fashion statements and both designed four different posters with each a different statement. We covered the entire wall with them to get a real ‘in your face’ effect.

For my internship I settled at Rotabs, a creative bazar for applied arts. I’ll be sharing a unit for the next four months with my classmate Charlie! A unit is made up of a studio space plus a exhibition space. I will be doing work on behalf of Rotabs as well as working on my own freelance assignments.

The upcoming exhibition will be september 18 during the Rotabs Rocks festival.

I am eager to see what this will bring!

For a school assignment I had to divide my work into two different categories, and make tabs for this. I came up with the caregories two- and three dimensional because sometimes I prefer to work ‘flat’, but other times more in 3D. I figured paper was a good material to use because it’s easy to use both in 2D as 3D.

Assignment for the Designskole Kolding: The assignment was to create a book with a minimum of twelve spreads about your exchange in Denmark, Kolding and the differences between your home town/country and Denmark. One of the interesting things about my exchange to Denmark was the interaction between the two places. And by that I mean all the (e)mail traffic between me and my friends and family back home. I collected all the (e)mail and text messages to create a story with it, and it would automatically show my experiences and the differences between my old and new home.

For the book I used a leporello technique which means you can fold the whole book out. By doing so you you get a chronological overview of all the messages I received and sent.

The back and cover of the book have the look of an envelope, which is used as an icon of communication.

Assignment for the Designskole Kolding; A self portrait. Being an art student really changed my view and perspective on things. Studying illustration became a part of my life and has a big influence on who I am as a person and how I act.

A group assignment at the Designskole Kolding. The assignment was to create a campaign against violence for a certain target group. The concept for this project is getting rid of social misunderstandings by communication of identity. To show things like insecurities, issues, opinions, dreams and hopes out in the open, in a positive funny and yet confronting way. Bring all these mutual things out in the open, this is how we can create new trust in unity.

Allow me to introduce you to my character; Herr G. Bruik, a wise old man who rediscovered the joy of living true recycling. He rebuilt his whole world from garbage and wrote a book about this to share his wisdom with the world. I built the characters world using waste materials, and then photographed it.
